REDUCING OUR FOOTPRINTS - OUR COMMITMENT

WE BELIEVE EACH STEP WE TAKE MATTERS

RESPONSIBLE TOURISM
Cape Insights is committed to sustainable travel principles. This is why we are calculating your carbon footprint accumulated by your journey to, from and within South Africa, and to offset the impact, we are making a voluntary donation to Food and Trees for Africa.

We uphold the philosophy of Giving Back:  Trees are the most efficient means for us to store carbon. Being carbon neutral doesn't necessarily mean producing zero carbon dioxide. It means that the net addition is zero, offset by other actions, such as planting trees, buying clean energy, etc. If we cannot be completely carbon neutral, we can definitely reduce our carbon footprint.

We undertake to lighten our impact wherever possible: such as using the internet as our primary communication medium, limiting the size of groups, consciously selecting low impact options, biodegradable materials, recycling paper, and implementing 'turn it off' policies with equipment.

We support local initiatives: family run hotels, owner managed restaurants, seasonal produce, regional wine, the South African Sustainability Seafood Initiative which advises on the consumption of approved seafood, and the members and champions of The Biodiversity and Wine Initiative that appy guidelines to minimise further loss to threatened natural habitats.

We endorse the principles of conserving our natural resources, preserving our cultural heritage and being accountable custodians.

ACCOUNTABLE CUSTODIANS
A Carbon Standard makes it easy and affordable for us to offset carbon emissions by planting trees in poor communities throughout South Africa. In addition to sinking carbon dioxide, trees contribute to improved water, energy, soil and noise management, food security, the enrichment of lives and the cultivation of healthier and more sustainable communities. The first ever carbon calculator using protocol to ensure that different trading platforms and other climate related initiatives adopt consistent accounting approaches was developed for FTFA by PriceWaterhouseCoopers South Africa.

To evaluate your carbon emissions such as land and air travel, energy usage for air conditioners and computers, mounds of paper consumption in the office, and to work out how many trees one would need to plant to sink the tally of carbon dioxide through the process of photosynthesis, visit the CO2 Calculator. Cape Insights is basing its contribution on this calculation.

We are a member of the Open Africa network of
Afrikatourism, which is a brand of tourism based on attractions, strengths and experiences unique to Africa, and conducts business in a way that respects and benefits local people, their culture and the natural environment, with community participation as its cornerstone.
Under the patronage of Nelson Mandela, Open Africa is a collaborative movement with the vision to link the splendours of Africa in a network of tourism routes from Cape to Cairo, with the aim of creating jobs in synergy with conservation.
