”In Bloom” is an exhibition celebrating indigenous flowers in paint, print, photography, sculpture, ceramics and jewellery.
Take this opportunity to delight in a refreshing compilation conceived and curated by Margie Murgatroyd of Africa Nova, at the Casa Labia, Main Road Muizenberg, until January 29.
Flowers belong to everyone. Celebrate our indigenous flora and local talent. Like the cleverly curated grouping of Andrew Putter’s photography which combines the talents of Tony Meintjies and Christopher Peters in Flora Capensis. Or Cathy Stanley’s Arcotsis series of long, narrow sheets of hand made paper inlaid with plant forms and Katherine Spindler’s hand cut paper works Restios.
Take home one of Peta Becker’s crochted cacti or Ronel Jordaan’s felted Porcupine Cushion. There’s new-comer Friday Jibu’s hand carved African Teak Seed and Carla da Cruz’s Wallflowers. Astrid Dahl and Kay Almitra ceramics. Nic Bladen’s silver smithing. Rene Twigge’s photographs. Nicholaas Maritz and Anthony Cawood’s paintings. Jill Trappler’s Sugarbush series.
The groupings foster a visual dialogue between the art works, and the use of differently coloured walls first seen in the Michael Stevenson gallery, unifies the works.
It’s a ”riotous flaunting” or in Dylan Thomas’ words ”the force that through the green fuse drives the flower”.
With grateful acknowledgement to Lucinda Jolly of the Cape Times
