The Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra founded in 1914 as the Cape Town Municipal Orchestra is perhaps the most versatile and active orchestras on the African continent. The CPO is one of the keystones of the Western Cape’s art and music scene. It attracts some of the leading international artists and as a completely multi-functional orchestra it delivers world-class concerts to all communities in the region. Along with its regular symphony concerts, it also performs with Cape Town Opera and Cape Town City Ballet, adding up to 140 performances per year.

In 2015 The CPO ushers in the New Year with  the 9th Cape Town International Summer Music Festival starting  22 January.

The 1st performance in the City Hall, a Cape Town heritage site, boasts an all-Russian programme including Tchaikovsky’s Francesca Da Rimini, Rachmaninov’s Majestic beast – Piano concerto no. 3 in D minor and Stravinsky’s bold, revolutionary and riotous “Rite of Spring” 102 years after its premier

Other great works to look forward to; Beethoven’s 3rd piano concerto paired with rich, mellow Brahms symphony in D on the 29th of January, Mahler’s heart wrenching Symphony no 5 on the 5th of Feb, Debussy, Ravel and Milhaud on the 12th of Feb and in April Tchaikovsky’s Symphony no. 3 on the 2nd building up to Beethoven’s magical Triple Concerto and Stravinsky’s blazing “Fire Bird” on the 9th.

Featured soloists include Oxana Yablonskaya, Dimitry Yablonsky, Stewart Goodyear and Janna Gandelman under the batons of Dimitry Yablonsky and Martin Panteleev.

The CPO also runs a vast outreach and community programme that includes two youth orchestras and grassroots training projects in various townships around Cape Town. To read more about the upcoming Summer Music Festival and other CPO activities click here.
