Using adventure to improve and save lives – that is the key concept of the Kingsley Holgate Foundation, founded by one of Africa’s most colourful modern day explorers.
Kingsley Holgate is a humanitarian adventurer, author, TV personality, Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, speaker at the New York Explorers Club and a legend that Getaway Magazine calls their ‘Explorer in Residence’ and the most travelled man in Africa.
On every expedition – many of them world-firsts – the Kingsley Holgate Foundation team distribute life-saving mosquito nets, water purification LifeStraws and Rite to Sight spectacles to remote villages throughout Africa and support wildlife conservation through community conservation education.
Having explored all 54 countries on the African continent, no other team of modern-day explorers have achieved so much in using the energy of adventure to make such a positive difference to the lives of so many.
They are also the only expedition team in the world to have discovered the geographic centre-point of Africa and reached all 7 ‘extreme’ geographic points on the African continent.
Around South Africa in 80 Days
The team has just completed an exceptional journey – The Mzansi Edge Expedition, a marathon humanitarian mission within SA’s borders that delivered more than 250 000 meals to needy families affected by Covid, clocking up more than 16 000km in 80 days.
Kingsley said ”It’s been good to be reminded of the diversity of nature, culture and community that make up our country. Wherever possible get out and enjoy the incredible adventure destinations South Africa has to offer.”
Sentiments worth sharing … Kingsley says:
”Life is all about the excitement of what lies ahead. To touch hearts is one thing, but to forever change lives for the better – this is what truly makes life worth living.
The gift of life is to use it for something that will outlast us.”
‘Africa – A Love Affair with a Continent’ is Kingsley’s 5th book that will be published shortly.
It spans 30 years of the Holgate team’s travels to every country in Africa, including all of her island states.
Packed with never-before-told stories taken from Kingsley’s pile of dog-eared expedition journals and laced with his legendary humor, each chapter is a stand-alone story of a life of adventure.
The excitement, escapades, humanitarian work and characters met along the way, with beautifully detailed descriptions of Africa’s wildlife, wild places and fascinating people – and the downright scary moments when things go wrong, from a croc chomping the inflatable boat, to child soldiers high on cocaine.
With incredible images taken on each expedition, it’s a must-have for all adventurous souls with a love for African travel, and exploration proceeds from the sale will go towards the humanitarian and conservation work of the Kingsley Holgate Foundation.
