Dr Hans Fransen

Art and architecture historian and author of seminal books on South African architecture such as the definitive The Old Buildings of the Cape and Old Towns and Villages of the Cape.

He has been involved in arts and culture since immigrating from Holland, as curator of the Stellenbosch and Groot Constantia museums, assistant director of the SA National Gallery and director of the Michaelis Art collection.

Knighted by the Netherlands for his pioneering work and dedication to architecture – the fieldwork for one book covers over 5 000 buildings, includes 700 photographs and required travelling 25 000 km by car and 5 000 km by bicycle.
