Prince Albert – Western Cape
Prince Albert is a quaint town situated on the edge of the Great Karoo, in a rich fruit growing area that is now attracting foodies from far and wide, as much for its local produce as for a recreational cooking school – African Relish – where guests discover the culinary pulse of South Africa.
It’s a Victorian village with many preserved Cape Dutch, Karoo and Georgian buildings.
Well-appointed accommodation is available in one of a hand picked number of renovated cottages. All are uniquely furnished to provide you with real comfort in a relaxed village atmosphere. Charming rooms are decorated in a fresh country style, with air conditioning and spacious garden privacy.
The town is blessed with a perennial water supply which belies the reputation of this arid region, where traditional irrigation furrows run along the streets and the sound of trickling water soothes the soul.
Nested in the foothills of the Swartberg Mountains, Prince Albert is the guardian of the spectacularly beautiful Swartberg Pass, the gateway to the Garden Route. This is a World Heritage site and part of the Cape Floral Kingdom comprising eight unique areas, where succulent karoo, fynbos and sub tropical thicket interface, resulting in a wonderful mosaic of plant life.
The Swartberg Pass built by Thomas Bain in 1888 is one of Africa’s premier drives, where twenty-seven kilometres of gravel road wind to a summit of 1,583 metres above sea level in steep zigzags and sudden switch-backs, with breathtaking views both north and south at every turn.
