“A forest of legs.”
It is a thousand words in one instant. A flash of emotion or a stirring of the heart. The powerful magic of storytelling with images and art where words just simply fail.
We salute the photographers, artists and laymen who manage to capture moments that speak so loud where mere words could not reach. It transcends language barriers and makes borders disappear. It also opens up interpretation from all the various angles we could not even fathom perhaps.
With digital platforms exploding as stage for self-expression, the demand and consumption of imagery have shifted from traditional to being the intrinsic part of the story. Some moments have fuelled the creation of original art and/or inclusion into the artwork itself. Feelings and social commentary can be portrayed visually for the viewer to make up their own mind about former taboo and/or unspoken subjects through this medium. It can enlighten, educate, bring awareness and open up dialogue.
For a smorgasboard of visual stimulation, the Cape Town Art Fair provided liberally this past weekend (see their social media feeds and #CTAF17), or the African Geographic Photographer of the Year 2017 competition is now open for a feast of wildlife, culture and travel images until end May 2017 – with weekly entry highlights to delight.
